We all know that poor choices about diet and exercise can shave years off your life. But so can this less known lifestyle factor.
Researchers have found that chronic sitting, the kind that comes from long hours at a desk, behind the wheel, or on the couch, may cut roughly five healthy years from a person's life. That puts prolonged inactivity in the same league as smoking and poor fitness, yet many people never give it a second thought.
The problem is not movement alone. Even people who exercise for thirty minutes a day can undo much of that benefit if they spend the other fifteen waking hours planted in a chair. The human body was built to move, and long stretches of stillness slow circulation, weaken muscles, and disrupt the way the body handles blood sugar and fat.
The fix does not require a gym membership. Standing up every half hour, taking short walks, stretching during phone calls, and using a standing desk for part of the day can make a real difference. Small, frequent breaks appear to reset the damage that builds up during long periods of sitting.
The takeaway is simple. Treat sitting like any other unhealthy habit. Notice how much of your day it fills, then break it up. Those few minutes of movement, repeated day after day, may be the easiest years you ever add to your life.
