For more than two years, I have sponsored and championed one of the most important public health efforts of my time in office: opening the Miami Center for Mental Health and Recovery at 2200 NW 7th Avenue, a place that will treat people living with serious mental illness instead of warehousing them in our jail. After twenty years of planning, false starts, and political hurdles, this facility is finally within reach.
The center is designed to offer a real alternative to the criminal justice system for those who need medical care, not handcuffs. Currently, too many individuals with severe mental health conditions cycle through the county jail, where they receive little to no treatment and often deteriorate further. The new facility will provide psychiatric care, counseling, and long-term recovery support in a dedicated medical setting.
Supporters say the project has gained momentum due to a growing recognition that incarceration is both costly and ineffective for this population. The center will include dozens of beds, outpatient services, and crisis stabilization units. It aims to reduce the burden on emergency rooms and law enforcement while giving patients a genuine path to stability.
Opponents have raised concerns about location, funding, and the timeline, but advocates argue that the status quo is far more expensive in both human and financial terms. With construction moving forward and key approvals secured, the long wait appears to be ending. For the first time in two decades, the Miami Center for Mental Health and Recovery is not just a dream but a project with a completion date in sight.
