Anthropic has released the full system-wide prompt for its Claude AI assistant, offering a rare look at how the company instructs the model to handle sensitive mental health conversations. The prompt, which shapes Claude's behavior across all interactions, includes specific guidelines for when users discuss topics like depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts.
The instructions direct Claude to avoid giving clinical diagnoses or prescribing treatments. Instead, the AI is told to acknowledge the user's emotional state, offer general coping strategies, and strongly encourage professional help when appropriate. The prompt emphasizes that Claude should not pretend to be a therapist or claim to understand the user's specific condition.
One notable section tells Claude to use phrases like "I am not a mental health professional" when the conversation turns to serious psychological distress. The model is also instructed to recognize crisis language and respond with hotline numbers or emergency resources without being prompted.
This transparency is unusual in the AI industry, where most companies keep their system prompts confidential. By publishing the full instructions, Anthropic allows researchers and users to see exactly how the model is being constrained. Critics have long worried that AI chatbots could give harmful advice in mental health scenarios, either by overstepping their role or by failing to recognize when a user is in crisis.
The prompt also includes a general rule that Claude should "be helpful, harmless, and honest." For mental health specifically, that means steering users toward real-world support while still providing a listening ear. The company appears to be walking a careful line between offering comfort and avoiding the appearance of medical authority.
Whether this approach works as intended remains an open question. But for now, Anthropic has set a new standard for transparency in how AI handles one of the most delicate areas of human conversation.
