Burcum: Mental health lifeline becomes collateral damage

Two of Vail's three metro Clubhouse locations may shut down by June 30 unless a state funding renewal issue is resolved quickly, according to columnist Jill Burcum. The Clubhouses, which provide critical mental health support and community connection for people with serious mental illness, have become collateral damage in what Burcum describes as a fixable bureaucratic snag.

The centers offer a structured, welcoming environment where members can work on job skills, socialize, and access peer support. For many, the Clubhouse is a lifeline that prevents isolation and hospitalization. The potential closures would leave hundreds of members without a place to turn.

State funding for the program is caught in a renewal process that has stalled, despite bipartisan support. Burcum notes that the problem is not a lack of money or political will, but a procedural delay that could be corrected with simple legislative action. Advocates are urging state officials to move quickly before the June deadline.

The loss of two Clubhouses would be devastating for a community already struggling with mental health resources. Members and staff are watching the clock, hoping that lawmakers will act before a vital support system collapses.
