Carteret County Health Department to host free Recovery Month event

MOREHEAD CITY, Carteret County - Carteret County will hold a free community gathering on Saturday, Aug. 29, to mark Recovery Month. The event is set to take place at the county health department's main campus, with doors opening at 10 a.m. and activities running until 2 p.m.

Organizers say the goal is to reduce stigma around substance use and mental health challenges while connecting residents with local resources. Attendees can expect informational tables staffed by peer support specialists, recovery coaches, and representatives from regional treatment programs. There will also be naloxone training sessions, where participants can learn how to respond to an overdose and receive a free kit.

The day is designed to be family-friendly. Kids can enjoy face painting and games, while adults can take part in guided meditation or listen to short talks from people with lived experience in recovery. Light refreshments will be provided, and all services are offered at no cost.

Recovery Month, observed nationally each September, aims to celebrate the gains made by those in recovery while encouraging others to seek help. County health officials note that the event is open to anyone, whether they are personally in recovery, supporting a loved one, or simply curious about what services exist in the area.
