A judge on Monday granted a request from prosecutors to have a separate mental health evaluation performed on a man charged with attacking a runner in the Bent Creek area earlier this year. The state's motion came during a routine hearing, with the district attorney arguing that an independent psychiatric assessment was necessary to determine the defendant's competency to stand trial.
The suspect, whose name has not been released due to ongoing proceedings, was arrested in February after a female runner reported being assaulted on a popular trail. Authorities said the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the incident, which sparked concern among local outdoor enthusiasts. The defendant has been held without bond since his arrest.
Defense attorneys had previously requested their own evaluation, citing concerns about their client's mental state. The judge's order allows both sides to proceed with separate assessments, which will be conducted by licensed psychiatrists. Results are expected to be submitted to the court within 30 days.
If found incompetent, the defendant could be sent to a state psychiatric facility for treatment until he is deemed fit to stand trial. The case has drawn attention to safety issues on recreational trails, though officials have not linked the attack to any broader pattern. The next court date is scheduled for late June.
