Drone Strikes Near Chernobyl Raise Fears for Regional Safety

Frequent drone attacks targeting the Chernobyl exclusion zone amount to a reckless gamble with public safety, a senior United Nations official warned this week. Alexander De Croo, who leads the United Nations Development Programme, said the strikes threaten a site still carrying the radioactive legacy of the 1986 disaster.

The warning follows repeated incidents in which unmanned aerial vehicles have entered the airspace around the shuttered plant. The protective shelter covering the destroyed reactor number four remains one of the most sensitive structures in Europe. Any damage to that containment system, experts note, could release hazardous material into the atmosphere and affect communities far beyond Ukraine's borders.

De Croo stressed that the danger is not confined to the immediate area. Wind patterns can carry contamination across national frontiers, placing millions of people at risk. He called the attacks a serious provocation and urged all parties to treat nuclear facilities as off limits during conflict.

Monitoring teams have reported damage to some buildings on the site, though radiation levels have so far stayed within normal ranges. Specialists caution that the situation remains fragile and that continued military activity near the plant raises the odds of a catastrophic accident.

Officials from several countries have echoed the concern, asking for restraint and for international inspectors to be granted full access. The site continues to require constant maintenance, and any interruption to that work poses additional hazards. For now, the call from the development agency is simple: keep the guns away from one of the world's most dangerous locations.
