The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo has reached a grim milestone, with deaths surpassing 700, as the virus spreads faster than health workers can monitor. The World Health Organization reports that 80 percent of new cases are emerging from unknown chains of transmission. This means the source of infection is not linked to any known patient, making it nearly impossible for response teams to isolate contacts and stop the spread.

The outbreak, centered in the volatile North Kivu and Ituri provinces, has been complicated by ongoing armed conflict and community mistrust.
