A former mental health patient has spoken out against the Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, describing the use of cameras and sensors in her bedroom as "frightening" and intrusive. The woman, who was under the care of the trust, said the remote monitoring equipment made her feel constantly watched and unable to relax in her own private space.
The devices, which include motion sensors and cameras, are intended to allow staff to observe patients remotely, reducing the need for in-person checks and potentially freeing up resources. However, critics argue that the technology undermines patient dignity and can exacerbate anxiety for those already struggling with mental health conditions.
The trust has defended the use of remote monitors, stating that they are implemented with patient consent and are designed to improve safety and care. Yet, the former patient’s account has reignited a broader debate about the balance between technological innovation and patient rights in mental health settings.
Mental health advocacy groups have called for a review of the trust’s policies, urging that patient feedback be prioritised over operational efficiency. The trust has acknowledged the concerns and said it will continue to evaluate its use of monitoring technology, ensuring that patient wellbeing remains the central focus of its care approach.
