Exhausted health workers in Congo struggle to keep up as Ebola outpaces contact tracing

In eastern Congo, a team of community health workers led by Gédéon Banga Ngbape is fighting a losing battle against the country's most rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak. Every day, they move through dense neighborhoods and rural paths, trying to find people who may have come into contact with the virus. But the disease is moving quicker than they can map it.

The workers are exhausted. Many have been on the ground for weeks without rest, walking long distances in heavy protective gear under the hot sun. They knock on doors, ask about symptoms, and urge families to report anyone who is sick. Yet new cases keep appearing in areas they have not yet reached. Contact tracing, the backbone of any Ebola response, is falling behind.

Part of the problem is mistrust. Some communities still resist health workers, believing the outbreak is not real or that the response teams bring harm. Others hide sick relatives out of fear of being taken to treatment centers. This makes it nearly impossible to build a complete picture of who has been exposed.

Health officials say the outbreak has spread to several zones, and the number of confirmed cases is climbing faster than in previous episodes. The workers are asking for more staff, better logistics, and more support from local leaders. Without that, they warn, the virus will keep slipping through the cracks. For now, they keep pushing forward, hoping their efforts will eventually catch up to the pace of the disease.
