Family stresses need for mental health resources after man's accused of killing his aunt

COLUMBUS - A local family is grieving what they describe as a double loss: the death of a beloved aunt and the arrest of the man accused of killing her, her own nephew. Relatives say the tragedy underscores a critical shortage of mental health resources in the community.

"It's just tragedy across the board, you know?" one family member said, speaking on behalf of the grieving relatives. The woman, identified as a longtime Columbus resident, was found dead earlier this week. Her nephew, who has not been named publicly, now faces murder charges.

Family members say the man had a history of mental health struggles and had repeatedly sought help. They claim he was unable to find consistent, long-term care. "We tried. We called. We begged," a relative said. "There was nowhere to turn. The system failed him, and now it's failed her too."

The case has reignited local conversations about access to psychiatric care and crisis intervention. Advocates say the community needs more inpatient beds, better follow-up services, and easier access to emergency mental health support. The family hopes their loss will push officials to act. "We don't want anyone else to go through this," they said. "This could have been prevented."
