A new review of research from across sub-Saharan Africa found that inadequate access to food is linked to depression, suicide attempts, HIV vulnerabilities, and poorer sexual and reproductive health outcomes among adolescent mothers.
The findings bring together evidence from multiple studies conducted in the region, where adolescent pregnancy and food insecurity often overlap. Researchers say the connection is not simply about hunger. It is about how the stress of not knowing where the next meal will come from shapes a young mother's mental state, her decisions, and her ability to protect her own health.
Adolescent mothers already face stigma, interrupted education, and limited income. When food runs short, those pressures multiply. The review points to a pattern in which food insecurity acts as both a cause and a consequence of poor health. A young mother who is depressed may struggle to earn or prepare food. A young mother who cannot feed her child may sink further into despair.
The researchers call for policies that treat food assistance and mental health support as connected services rather than separate ones. Programs that target adolescent mothers specifically, they argue, could reduce suicide risk, lower HIV exposure, and improve reproductive health outcomes.
The review adds to a growing body of work showing that hunger is rarely just a physical problem. For young mothers in sub-Saharan Africa, it is also a mental health crisis that demands attention.
