Jersey's government has kicked off a three-month pilot program offering free health check clinics for women living with polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. The initiative is being described as a positive first step, though local advocates say there is still plenty of room to expand services.
The clinics, which began this week, provide consultations, blood tests, and lifestyle advice tailored to the condition. PCOS affects hormone levels, often leading to irregular periods, acne, weight gain, and fertility challenges. For years, women on the island have called for better access to diagnosis and ongoing care, saying that many have to wait months for a specialist appointment.
Health officials say the trial will help them gauge demand and identify gaps in current support. They also hope to reduce the frustration many patients feel when symptoms are dismissed or downplayed. Early feedback from those who have booked in has been encouraging, with slots filling quickly.
However, campaigners argue that a three-month window is not enough. They point out that PCOS is a lifelong condition and that follow-up care, mental health support, and nutritional guidance need to be built into the system long-term. One local support group leader said the trial is a "good start" but stressed that the real test will be whether the government turns this pilot into a permanent service.
The clinics are being run at two community health centers, with no referral needed. Women can book directly by phone or online. The government has not yet confirmed what happens after the trial ends, but officials say they will review the data and listen to patient experiences before making any decisions. For now, the message is clear: help is available, but the conversation about proper, sustained care is far from over.
