A newly built health hub in King's Lynn, costing 11.5 million pounds, is facing criticism because it does not have any general practitioners on site. The facility was designed to provide primary health care services, according to a local councillor, but residents are questioning why such a large investment was made without securing doctors to staff it.
The hub, which opened its doors recently, was intended to ease pressure on local medical services. It offers space for community health teams, including nurses and physiotherapists, but the absence of GPs has left many feeling let down. One councillor explained that the building was never meant to replace traditional doctor surgeries, but rather to complement them by offering a wider range of services under one roof.
However, locals argue that the lack of GPs makes the hub feel incomplete. With waiting times for appointments already long across Norfolk, many had hoped the new facility would directly address the shortage of family doctors. Instead, they see a modern, empty building that does not solve the core problem.
The council has defended the project, stating that the hub is part of a long-term plan to improve healthcare access. They note that the building can adapt over time, and that recruiting GPs remains a national challenge. For now, though, the frustration is palpable among residents who expected more from an 11.5 million pound investment.
