Guarding our health is an act of Jewish responsibility

Guarding our health is an act of Jewish responsibility

There is a common misunderstanding that spiritual devotion means ignoring physical needs. Some believe that constant prayer and study are the only true expressions of faith, while exercise, sleep, and proper nutrition are seen as distractions or even indulgences. But this view misses a central teaching of Jewish tradition.

The body is not a shell to be discarded or a burden to be endured. It is a gift, entrusted to us for a purpose. Jewish law is clear on this point: we are commanded to guard our health. The principle of preserving life, pikuach nefesh, overrides almost every other commandment. If keeping the body healthy is that important, then neglecting it cannot be considered piety.

This means that choosing to rest when exhausted is not laziness. Eating nourishing food is not gluttony. Taking time to move, stretch, and strengthen the body is not vanity. These are acts of responsibility. They acknowledge that our lives are not entirely our own. We are caretakers of something precious.

Of course, this does not mean obsessing over every meal or turning fitness into an idol. The goal is not perfection or a certain appearance. The goal is to be present, capable, and ready to serve. A person who is constantly sick, exhausted, or in pain cannot fully show up for family, community, or sacred work.

In a culture that often pushes us toward extremes, the Jewish approach is one of balance. We honor the soul by honoring the body that carries it. We do not worship the vessel, but we do not despise it either. We care for it because it is part of the divine plan.

So the next time you feel guilty for taking a walk instead of working longer, or for going to bed early instead of reading one more chapter, remember this: protecting your health is not a retreat from faith. It is an expression of it.
