Health officials confirm Marathon County measles case linked to out-of-state travel

Health authorities in Wisconsin have identified a confirmed case of measles in a Marathon County resident. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services along with the Marathon County Health Department released the information, noting that the infection is connected to travel outside the state.

The individual was exposed while traveling, according to officials. This marks a rare occurrence in the region, as measles was considered eliminated in the United States since 2000. However, cases still appear when unvaccinated individuals travel to areas where the virus circulates and then return home.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease. It spreads through coughing and sneezing, and the virus can linger in the air for up to two hours. Symptoms typically include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash that starts on the face and spreads downward.
