A Herefordshire farmer is preparing for a monumental 142-mile walk across the county to raise awareness and funds for mental health support within the agricultural community. Sam Stables, from Wellington Heath near Ledbury, aims to highlight the often-hidden struggles faced by those working in farming.
Stables plans to trek the entire length of the Herefordshire Trail, a challenging journey expected to take approximately ten days. His mission is driven by a desire to break the stigma surrounding mental health in rural areas and to ensure farmers know that support is available and that they are not alone in their battles.
"I want to make people aware of what farmers are going through," Stables explained. He emphasized the unique pressures of the profession, including isolation, financial volatility, and the immense weight of responsibility, which can severely impact well-being. The campaign seeks to foster open conversations and direct vital resources to local mental health charities specifically serving the farming population.
The walk represents both a personal challenge and a public gesture of solidarity. By taking each step, Stables hopes to send a powerful message of hope and resilience, encouraging others within the farming community to reach out for help when needed and reminding the wider public of the human stories behind Britain's agricultural industry.
