Veteran forward Kevin Ellison, who once earned a move to Premier League side Leicester City, has spoken candidly about his ongoing career at the age of 47 and the importance of discussing mental health in football. Ellison, now turning out for non-league side Warrington Rylands, insists he feels no embarrassment about still playing at an age when most professionals have long since retired.
"I'm not ashamed," Ellison said in a recent interview. "People might look at me and wonder why I'm still going, but I love the game and I love being part of a dressing room. It keeps me connected, and it keeps me sane." The striker, who has had a nomadic career spanning over two decades, also highlighted how staying active has helped him manage his own mental wellbeing, particularly after the isolation many players felt during the pandemic.
Ellison, who scored over 200 career goals, believes that too many players suffer in silence when their careers end. He stressed that talking openly about struggles is vital, not just for young players but for veterans like himself. "When you stop playing, you lose your identity. I've seen lads go downhill quickly because they didn't ask for help. I want to be someone who shows it's okay to say you're struggling," he said.
His current manager has praised Ellison's professionalism and leadership, noting that his experience is invaluable in the dressing room. While some critics question whether a 47-year-old can still compete at a decent level, Ellison's record this season suggests he can. He has already chipped in with several goals and assists, proving that age is not always a barrier.
For Ellison, the message is simple: keep playing if it makes you happy, and never be afraid to speak up. "If my story helps one person pick up the phone and talk to someone, then it's all worth it," he added.
