Two county levies that fund services for older adults and mental health programs are on the ballot, and supporters say they can be renewed without raising taxes. The measures would continue existing property tax funding that pays for programs many residents depend on, including in-home care for seniors, meal delivery, crisis intervention, and counseling for people who cannot afford private treatment.
Backers argue the levies are not new taxes. They replace expiring ones at the same rate, so the amount homeowners pay would stay flat rather than increase. Supporters describe the funding as essential to a safety net that has little room to absorb losses, noting that demand for mental health services has climbed in recent years while waiting lists for senior assistance remain long.
The warning from proponents is blunt: if either measure fails, county agencies would have to cut staff, reduce hours, or eliminate programs outright. Case managers who help seniors stay in their homes could be laid off. Crisis lines could shorten their hours. Counseling slots for uninsured residents could disappear.
Opponents question whether the counties have done enough to show the money is spent well, and some taxpayers remain wary of any levy request even when the rate is unchanged. With early voting underway, both sides are making their case to a public that will decide how much these services are worth.
