McKesson, the Texas-based healthcare giant, is expanding its oncology footprint with a major acquisition. The company announced plans to buy Precision Medicine Group, a Maryland firm that provides data, laboratory services, and other support to cancer drug developers. The deal is valued at roughly $2.25 billion.
This move signals McKesson's push to strengthen its position in the growing field of precision medicine, where treatments are tailored to individual patients based on genetic and molecular markers. Precision Medicine Group works behind the scenes for biotech and pharma companies, helping them run clinical trials, manage complex data, and get new cancer therapies to market faster.
McKesson already has a large distribution network for cancer drugs and runs specialty pharmacy services. Adding Precision Medicine Group gives it a direct hand in the research and development side of the business. That means McKesson can now offer a more complete package to drugmakers, from early-stage trial support to final delivery of the medicine to clinics.
The companies expect the deal to close later this year, pending regulatory approval. McKesson says the acquisition will help it meet the rising demand for more targeted cancer treatments, which have become a key focus for the industry. Financial details show the purchase will be funded through cash on hand and existing credit.
For now, Precision Medicine Group will keep its name and leadership team. McKesson says the goal is to keep the unit nimble while giving it access to broader resources. The move is one of the larger oncology-related deals this year, reflecting a wider trend of healthcare distributors moving closer to the science behind the drugs they sell.
