Robert Murphy, MD, the executive director of the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health, has been selected to receive the 2026 Distinguished Leadership in Global Health Award from the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH). This honor recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional vision, innovation, and sustained commitment to advancing health equity and global health education worldwide.
Dr. Murphy’s career spans decades of work in infectious diseases, particularly in HIV/AIDS research and treatment in resource-limited settings. Under his leadership, the Havey Institute has expanded its reach across multiple continents, fostering partnerships that bridge clinical care, research, and policy. The institute’s initiatives have focused on building local healthcare capacity, training the next generation of global health practitioners, and addressing systemic disparities in access to care.
The CUGH award committee cited Dr. Murphy’s ability to translate complex scientific findings into actionable public health strategies, as well as his mentorship of emerging leaders in the field. Colleagues note that his collaborative approach has been instrumental in forging alliances between academic institutions, governments, and non-governmental organizations.
“This recognition is a testament to the incredible work of our entire team and the communities we serve,” Dr. Murphy said in response to the announcement. “Global health is a collective effort, and I share this honor with everyone who has contributed to our mission.”
The award will be formally presented at the CUGH 2026 annual conference, where Dr. Murphy is expected to deliver a keynote address reflecting on the future of global health collaboration. The honor places him among a select group of leaders who have shaped the direction of international health initiatives over the past two decades.
