UNC Health rebrands startup investment arm, adds $125M

UNC Health rebrands startup investment arm, adds $125M

UNC Health has officially rebranded its startup investment division, which was previously known as Rex Health Ventures. Along with the new identity, the health system is adding $125 million in fresh capital to back early-stage companies focused on healthcare innovation.

Since its founding, the investment arm has put money into 30 different companies. Those investments span a range of areas, including digital health tools, medical devices, and care delivery models. The group typically looks for startups that align with UNC Health's clinical priorities and can benefit from partnerships within the system.

The rebrand is meant to reflect a broader mission beyond the original Rex Hospital connection. The new name signals that the program now serves the entire UNC Health network, not just one facility. The extra $125 million will allow the team to write larger checks and support portfolio companies for longer stretches, which is often a challenge in early-stage investing.

Leaders at UNC Health say the goal is not just financial return. They want to bring promising technologies into real clinical settings faster. By working closely with doctors and nurses, the investment team can help startups test products in actual hospitals and clinics. That kind of hands-on support is something many venture firms cannot offer.

The move comes as more hospital systems across the country are setting up their own venture funds. These arms give health systems a way to shape the future of care while also generating revenue. For UNC, the additional funding is a clear signal that this strategy is working and worth expanding.

No specific startups were named in the announcement, but the team says it is actively looking at new opportunities in areas like artificial intelligence, home-based care, and mental health. The new fund is expected to deploy capital over the next several years.
