Residents of a prominent Upper West Side apartment building were notified on Friday that legionella bacteria had been detected in the building's hot water system. The memo, sent to tenants of The Ardsley at 320 Central Park West, advised residents to take precautions while the issue is addressed.
The bacteria, which can cause Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of pneumonia, was discovered during routine testing. Building management stated that they are working with environmental health specialists to flush and treat the hot water system. Residents were instructed to avoid hot water for drinking or cooking until further notice, though cold water remains safe to use.
Legionella thrives in warm, stagnant water and can become aerosolized through showers or faucets. Symptoms of infection include cough, fever, and shortness of breath, with older adults and those with weakened immune systems at higher risk. No cases of illness have been reported in connection with the building so far.
Management said they will provide updates as remediation progresses and urged residents to contact their healthcare provider if they experience any symptoms. The building, a landmarked prewar cooperative near Central Park, houses several hundred residents.
