Virginia Tech enters the upcoming basketball season with a clear sense of direction. The program is counting on better health and a stable roster to fuel a serious push for the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Mike Young made it plain that keeping the team's key contributors together matters a great deal.
"To retain your core and guys that have done it and good players ... it's a big, big deal," Young said.
That continuity gives the Hokies something they lacked in recent years, when injuries and roster turnover disrupted any chance at building momentum. Having veterans who understand the system and trust each other on the floor changes how a team handles tight games in conference play.
The staff believes the returning players bring leadership and familiarity that cannot be manufactured overnight. Younger additions will be asked to fill specific roles rather than carry the load right away. If the roster stays healthy, Virginia Tech expects to compete in a crowded ACC and put itself in position for an at-large bid when March arrives.
For now, the focus stays on daily improvement, conditioning, and keeping the group intact. The Hokies know the margin between a tournament berth and an early exit is thin, and they intend to make the most of the experience they have worked to preserve.
