Health officials in Wayne County are monitoring 27 potential cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic intestinal infection, as the outbreak continues to expand across southeast Michigan. The county's health department confirmed it is working with state and local partners to identify the source of the illness, which typically causes watery diarrhea, cramping, nausea, and fatigue.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, often spread through contaminated food or water. Symptoms can appear days or weeks after exposure and may last for several weeks if untreated. While the infection is not typically life-threatening, it can be severe for people with weakened immune systems.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has reported a rising number of cases in recent weeks, with clusters emerging in multiple counties. Officials have not yet pinpointed a specific food item or event responsible for the outbreak, but they are urging residents to practice thorough handwashing and to wash fruits and vegetables before eating.
Anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea, especially after traveling or eating imported produce, should contact a healthcare provider. Testing is required to confirm cyclosporiasis, as its symptoms overlap with other gastrointestinal illnesses. The Wayne County health department continues to investigate and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
