West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquitoes in Coastal Georgia

Health officials are urging residents to reach for the bug spray before stepping outside. The Coastal Health District confirmed that three mosquito samples collected in Chatham County have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The positive samples were gathered during routine surveillance. While no human cases have been reported so far, the discovery serves as a reminder that the virus is circulating in the area. West Nile Virus is commonly spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who contract the virus experience no symptoms, but about one in five develop fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, or a rash. In rare cases, severe illness can affect the nervous system, leading to encephalitis or meningitis.

Officials recommend taking simple precautions. Use an EPA-approved insect repellent, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors. Eliminate standing water around homes, including in flower pots, bird baths, and gutters, since mosquitoes breed there. Make sure window and door screens are intact.

The Coastal Health District continues to monitor mosquito activity and will conduct additional testing. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and protect themselves, particularly as warmer weather keeps people outside longer.
