Dr. William H. Foege, whose innovative strategy was instrumental in vanquishing smallpox, has died at the age of 89. His passing marks the loss of a giant in global health, whose work saved tens of millions of lives.
In the 1960s and 70s, as smallpox raged, Foege championed a method known as "surveillance and containment." Instead of attempting mass, indiscriminate vaccination of entire populations—a logistical nightmare—his approach focused on rapidly identifying outbreaks and then vaccinating only the contacts of infected individuals. This targeted "ring vaccination" strategy proved brilliantly efficient and became the cornerstone of the global eradication campaign. The World Health Organization declared smallpox eradicated in 1980, a milestone considered one of humanity's greatest achievements.
Foege's leadership extended far beyond this triumph. He served as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, strengthening the agency's mission. A lifelong advocate for immunization, he co-founded the Task Force for Global Health and was a passionate voice for ensuring all children, regardless of geography or wealth, have access to lifesaving vaccines. His legacy is a testament to the power of strategic science and profound compassion in the relentless pursuit of a healthier world.
