Woman’s Perinatal Mental Health Unit leads a new approach to maternal mental health

Woman’s Perinatal Mental Health Unit leads a new approach to maternal mental health

The Perinatal Mental Health Unit at Woman's Hospital has received a Community Impact Award for its pioneering work in maternal mental health care. The recognition comes from Business Report's first Excellence in Healthcare Awards program.

The unit, which opened as Louisiana's first inpatient psychiatric facility dedicated solely to pregnant and postpartum women, has changed how the state approaches mental health care for new mothers. Before its creation, women experiencing severe perinatal mood disorders often had limited options, sometimes being separated from their babies during treatment or going without specialized care entirely.

The award highlights the unit's role in closing a critical gap in healthcare. Perinatal mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety, affect up to one in five women during pregnancy and the first year after childbirth. Left untreated, these conditions can have serious consequences for both mother and child.

The unit's approach combines psychiatric treatment with obstetric care, allowing women to receive comprehensive support in one place. Patients can stay with their infants while receiving care, which helps preserve the mother-child bond during a vulnerable time.

Hospital officials say the award reflects the dedication of the entire team, from psychiatrists and nurses to social workers and support staff. They hope the recognition will draw more attention to maternal mental health needs across the region.

The Excellence in Healthcare Awards program was created to celebrate organizations and individuals making meaningful contributions to healthcare in the community. Woman's Hospital was among several honorees in the inaugural class.
