Women With Mental Illness Need Better Support to Become Mothers

The maternal mental health needs of women with serious mental illness have been badly underprioritized in American society, writes Meg LeDuc. She speaks from personal experience, describing how the stigma attached to conditions such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia shapes the way others view a woman's fitness to become a parent.

Women living with these diagnoses often face a double standard. Their physical health is monitored closely, yet their reproductive wishes are treated as reckless or unrealistic. Doctors may discourage pregnancy instead of discussing how to plan for it safely. Family members may assume that motherhood is out of reach. The result is a group of women whose desires are dismissed before they are even examined.

LeDuc argues that this neglect has real consequences. When mental health care and reproductive care operate in separate silos, women lose access to the counseling, medication management, and peer support that could help them through pregnancy and early parenthood. Fear of judgment keeps many from asking questions at all.

She calls for a shift in how the system responds. That means training providers to talk about parenthood without condescension, funding programs that support mothers with psychiatric conditions, and listening when women describe what they want for their lives. Support, not suspicion, should be the starting point.
