Ballad Health has officially started construction on a significant expansion of the emergency department at Johnson City Medical Center. The project aims to address growing patient volumes and improve access to critical care in the region. Hospital officials say the work will add more than 20 new treatment bays, including dedicated spaces for behavioral health patients and a larger triage area designed to speed up intake.
The expanded emergency department will also feature a new entrance and updated waiting areas. Leaders at Ballad Health say the current ER was built decades ago and no longer meets the needs of a fast-growing community. The project is expected to take about two years to complete, with the new space opening in phases to minimize disruption to ongoing patient care.
Local emergency physicians have welcomed the news, noting that overcrowding has been a persistent challenge. The expansion is part of a broader effort by Ballad Health to modernize facilities across its network. While specific cost figures were not released, the health system confirmed the project is fully funded through operational budgets and capital reserves.
Construction crews have already begun site preparation work, including utility relocation and foundation digging. Hospital administrators say they will provide regular updates as the project moves forward.
