State Treasurer Brad Briner said he does not expect the upcoming North Carolina budget to include money for restoring coverage of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs under the State Health Plan. The high cost of these medications, combined with other pressing budget needs, makes it unlikely lawmakers will add the benefit back anytime soon.
Briner made the comments during a recent board meeting, noting that while the drugs have proven effective for weight loss, their price tag remains a major obstacle. The State Health Plan previously covered the medications but dropped the benefit due to rising expenses. Since then, some state employees and retirees have pushed for its return, arguing the drugs can prevent more serious health problems down the line.
However, Briner pointed out that the state faces competing demands for limited funds, including education, infrastructure, and public safety. He said restoring GLP-1 coverage would require a significant financial commitment, and so far, there is no sign that legislative leaders are willing to make that a priority in the next budget cycle.
The treasurer's remarks suggest that state workers hoping for a change in coverage may have to wait longer. While the issue remains under discussion, Briner made clear that the current fiscal reality does not support bringing the benefit back. For now, the State Health Plan will continue covering GLP-1 drugs only for diabetes treatment, not for weight loss alone.
