A French citizen who was brought back home from a cruise ship linked to a deadly hantavirus outbreak has now tested positive for the virus, according to Health Minister Stéphanie Rist. The patient was among several passengers repatriated after the ship became the focus of a health scare that has raised alarm across international borders.
Rist stated that the individual is receiving medical care and is in stable condition. Health authorities are tracing close contacts to prevent any further spread. The hantavirus, which can cause severe respiratory illness, is typically transmitted through contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. However, outbreaks on cruise ships remain extremely rare, making this case particularly concerning for global health officials.
The cruise ship involved had been sailing in a region where hantavirus cases have been reported in recent months. French health officials are coordinating with international partners to monitor the situation. Passengers who were on the same voyage have been advised to watch for symptoms, which include fever, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. The minister emphasized that the risk to the general public remains low, but vigilance is necessary as investigations continue.
