Guilford County's Behavioral Health Center is nearing its five-year anniversary, and officials are highlighting its growing impact on the community. According to county data, the center served more than 20,000 individuals in the past year alone, a milestone that underscores the rising demand for mental health and substance use services in the region.
Opened in 2020 as a centralized hub for crisis care, the facility was designed to divert people from jail and emergency rooms. It offers walk-in assessments, short-term stabilization, and connections to long-term treatment. County leaders say the center has become a critical safety net, especially for those without insurance or access to private care.
"We are seeing more people come through our doors every year," said a county health official. "The need is not going away, and this center is proving its worth as a frontline resource."
The anniversary comes amid ongoing discussions about expanding mental health funding in North Carolina. While the center has reduced strain on local hospitals, officials note that follow-up care and housing remain challenges for many patients. Still, the facility's five-year track record is being held up as a model for other counties looking to build similar crisis response systems.
