Nearly 450,000 New Yorkers Are Losing Health Coverage July 1

Nearly 450,000 New Yorkers Are Losing Health Coverage July 1

Thousands of low-income New Yorkers are among the first to feel the impacts of the "Big Beautiful Bill." Starting July 1, nearly 450,000 residents will lose their health insurance coverage, a direct result of recent federal policy changes. The majority of those affected are enrolled in Medicaid or the Essential Plan, which provides low-cost coverage to adults with incomes just above Medicaid eligibility.

State officials have warned that the cuts will hit vulnerable communities hardest, including working families, seniors, and people with disabilities. The loss of coverage means many will no longer have access to routine doctor visits, prescription drugs, or preventive care. For some, it could mean the difference between managing a chronic condition and facing a medical emergency without insurance.

Advocacy groups are scrambling to help affected individuals find alternative plans through the state's health exchange, but they warn that options are limited. Many of those losing coverage will see premiums jump significantly or face gaps in care. The state has set up a hotline and online portal for people to check their status and apply for other programs, but the sheer volume of people affected has overwhelmed the system.

The "Big Beautiful Bill" has been a point of contention since its passage, with supporters arguing it reduces government spending and opponents saying it shifts costs onto the most vulnerable. For now, the clock is ticking for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who must find new coverage before the July deadline.
