A new report from the Auditor General has raised serious concerns about the state of Northern Ireland's health infrastructure, revealing that only 40% of health facilities are currently in an acceptable condition. The assessment paints a grim picture of aging hospitals, clinics, and care centers that are struggling to meet modern standards.
The audit highlights a backlog of maintenance work that has grown significantly over recent years. Many buildings are described as being in a "deteriorating" state, with issues ranging from leaking roofs and faulty heating systems to outdated electrical wiring. These problems not only affect patient comfort but also pose risks to safety and the delivery of care.
The report notes that the Department of Health has acknowledged the scale of the problem but has been hampered by budget constraints and competing priorities. The cost of bringing all facilities up to a satisfactory standard is estimated to run into hundreds of millions of pounds. Without a sustained increase in funding, the audit warns that the situation will only worsen.
Health officials have responded by stating that a long-term capital investment plan is being developed. However, critics argue that years of underinvestment have left the system in a precarious position. The findings come as hospitals continue to face pressure from waiting lists and staffing shortages, adding to the challenges of maintaining a safe and effective health service.
