Nurses deliver petition opposing CommonSpirit Health’s planned layoffs of frontline health care workers

Nurses deliver petition opposing CommonSpirit Health’s planned layoffs of frontline health care workers

Registered nurses staged a protest and delivered a petition to CommonSpirit Health leadership on Tuesday, pushing back against the system's plan to cut more than 175 frontline positions across 17 hospitals in California. The petition, signed by over 5,000 nurses, calls on the company to abandon the layoffs entirely.

The rally and press conference drew attention to what nurses describe as a direct threat to patient safety. They argue that reducing staff at a time when hospitals are already stretched thin will lead to longer wait times, higher rates of burnout among remaining workers, and worse outcomes for patients. The nurses say the layoffs target the very people who provide most of the direct care, including bedside staff who monitor vital signs, administer medications, and respond to emergencies.

CommonSpirit Health has not yet issued a public response to the petition. But the nurses are not waiting. Their demand is simple: rescind the layoffs immediately. They point out that the health system reported strong financial results in recent quarters, which makes the cuts harder to justify.

The affected hospitals span multiple counties, and nurses from several facilities attended the event to share their concerns. Some spoke about the emotional toll of watching colleagues lose jobs while patient volumes remain high. Others noted that the layoffs come at a time when recruitment and retention of nurses is already a major challenge nationwide.

Union representatives say this is just the beginning. If CommonSpirit does not reverse course, they plan to escalate with further actions. For now, the petition serves as a clear message: nurses are watching, and they are not staying silent.
