A robotic seal named Sammy is now attending mental health appointments across Kent and Medway, offering a high-tech way to calm patient anxiety. The lifelike robot, designed to mimic the behavior of a real seal, responds to touch and sound by moving its head, blinking its eyes, and making soft noises. Health officials say the device is not a replacement for human care but a tool to help patients feel more at ease during consultations.
Sammy is being introduced through a pilot program run by the Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust. The seal has already shown promise in reducing stress for people with dementia, autism, and other mental health conditions. Its soft fur and gentle reactions create a soothing presence, which can lower heart rates and encourage conversation. Therapists have noted that patients who struggle with eye contact or verbal communication often respond better when Sammy is in the room.
The trust plans to expand the use of robotic animals if the pilot proves successful. While some may question the cost or the idea of using a machine for comfort, early feedback from both patients and staff has been positive. One nurse described the seal as "a quiet companion that opens doors for connection." For now, Sammy will visit clinics and hospital wards, bringing a bit of robotic warmth to the mental health system.
