San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and H-E-B have revived a program that helps people pay for insulin. The newly relaunched Diabetes Insulin Assistance Program will cover $100 per prescription, including refills, for those who qualify based on financial need.
The program targets residents who struggle with the high cost of insulin, a critical medication for managing diabetes. Under the arrangement, Metro Health and the grocery chain split the cost to lower the burden on patients. Officials say the assistance applies to each prescription fill, not just the first one, which could add up to significant savings over time for people who need regular refills.
To qualify, applicants must meet income guidelines and provide proof of residency in Bexar County. The program does not cover other diabetes supplies or medications, only insulin. Metro Health staff will process applications and verify eligibility at designated enrollment sites.
The original program launched in 2019 but paused during the pandemic. Rising insulin prices have continued to strain families, and local leaders say bringing the program back was a priority. H-E-B, which operates pharmacies across Texas, has been a key partner in similar health initiatives in the region.
Anyone interested can contact Metro Health for application details and a list of participating H-E-B pharmacies. The program runs until funding runs out, so early enrollment is encouraged.
