Mission District Supervisor Jackie Fielder is back at San Francisco City Hall after taking a three-month leave of absence on the advice of her doctor. Fielder, who represents the city's diverse Mission District, stepped away from her duties in late 2024 to focus on her mental health. Her return was confirmed by her office on Tuesday.
During her absence, Fielder's staff continued to handle constituent services and legislative work, but her vote was often absent from key board meetings. The supervisor had been open about the challenges of balancing public service with personal well-being, a conversation that has become more common among elected officials in recent years.
In a brief statement, Fielder thanked her colleagues and constituents for their patience and support. She said the time away allowed her to rest and recharge, and she is now ready to resume her responsibilities. Her first day back included a closed-door meeting with staff to catch up on pending issues, including housing policy and public safety concerns in the Mission.
Fielder's leave was not widely publicized at the time, but her return has drawn attention to the pressures faced by local politicians. Mental health advocates have praised her decision to prioritize her health, calling it a positive example for public figures. Fielder is expected to attend the next full Board of Supervisors meeting later this week.
