Brooke County health officials are warning residents about a troubling trend they have observed so far this year: a significant rise in rabies cases. The uptick has prompted renewed calls for caution among pet owners and anyone who spends time outdoors.
"Any mammal can get rabies," officials reminded the public, emphasizing that the virus poses a serious threat to both animals and humans. The warning comes after several confirmed cases in local wildlife, including raccoons and foxes, which are common carriers of the disease in this region.
Health authorities are urging residents to ensure their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations. They also advise avoiding contact with wild animals, especially those acting strangely or appearing sick. Signs of rabies in animals can include aggression, drooling, or difficulty moving.
Anyone who is bitten or scratched by an animal should seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to local animal control. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but prompt treatment after exposure can prevent the disease.
Officials stress that prevention is key. Keeping garbage secured, not feeding stray animals, and supervising pets outdoors can reduce the risk of encounters with rabid wildlife. The county is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as needed.
