Chicago residents have more options than ever for getting mental health support, but knowing which number to call can be confusing. Each service is designed for a different situation, and using the wrong one can delay care or overwhelm emergency systems.
For immediate danger, 911 remains the right call. If someone is actively harming themselves or others, or if there is a medical emergency, dispatchers can send police, paramedics, or a crisis intervention team. However, for a mental health crisis that does not involve a weapon or violence, the city encourages calling 988 instead. This national hotline connects callers to trained counselors who can de-escalate situations over the phone and, if needed, dispatch a mobile crisis response team. Chicago has expanded these teams to reduce police involvement in non-violent mental health calls.
For ongoing support that is not urgent, the city recently launched a new email address for non-crisis mental health questions. Residents can send a message to get referrals for therapists, support groups, or substance use programs. This is meant for people who feel stable but need guidance on where to start.
The key is to match the service to the severity of the moment. 988 is for emotional distress. 911 is for immediate physical danger. The new email is for planning and resources. Knowing the difference can save time and, in some cases, a life.
