Pennsylvania has crossed a troubling threshold this year, with measles cases now exceeding 100 as state health officials confirmed a dozen new infections this week. The outbreak, which began in early 2024, has spread across seven counties, marking one of the most significant resurgences of the virus in the state in recent decades.
The latest cases were identified in both children and adults, with several linked to community transmission rather than travel abroad. Health authorities have been working to trace contacts and urge vaccination, particularly in areas where immunization rates have dipped below the threshold needed for herd immunity. The counties affected include Allegheny, Philadelphia, and several rural regions where access to healthcare remains limited.
Measles, once declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, has made a comeback due to declining vaccination rates in some communities. The virus is highly contagious, lingering in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room. Symptoms typically begin with fever, cough, and red eyes, followed by a characteristic rash.
State health officials are advising residents to check their vaccination records and ensure they have received the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. They emphasize that two doses of the vaccine are about 97 percent effective at preventing the disease. The current outbreak has already led to hospitalizations, though no deaths have been reported so far.
