Health authorities in San Diego County issued a strong recommendation on Thursday, urging all residents to ensure they are vaccinated against measles. This advisory comes in response to a significant increase in measles cases being reported across the United States, with confirmed infections already identified in neighboring regions like Los Angeles and Orange counties.
Measles is a highly contagious airborne virus that can lead to severe complications, especially in young children and vulnerable populations. Officials emphasized that the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is both safe and exceptionally effective at preventing the disease. Two doses of the vaccine are approximately 97% effective at providing lifelong immunity.
The recent uptick in cases nationally is largely attributed to pockets of unvaccinated individuals. Health leaders stress that widespread vaccination is crucial not only for personal protection but also for maintaining community immunity, which shields those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. Residents are encouraged to review their immunization records and contact their healthcare providers if they or their children are not fully protected.
