The Western Pacific Region has achieved notable progress in combating HIV/AIDS through enhanced prevention efforts and expanded access to treatment. However, recent data indicates a troubling resurgence of the epidemic in certain countries, particularly among high-risk groups such as people who inject drugs. The rise in HIV infections is exacerbated by the increased availability of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) and the lack of comprehensive harm reduction services.
Legal frameworks that criminalize drug use contribute to stigma, hindering outreach efforts to vulnerable populations and undermining national health responses. Moreover, inadequate access to rapid HIV screening and treatment, along with shortages of essential medical supplies, has led to a growing number of undiagnosed and untreated cases.
The intersection of HIV and tuberculosis (TB) poses additional challenges, as individuals with HIV are at a higher risk of developing active TB. The rise in new HIV infections threatens to derail progress in TB control, especially in regions where both epidemics are on the rise.
Substance use is increasingly recognized as a significant, yet often overlooked, factor in HIV transmission. The upcoming event at the seventy-sixth session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific aims to address these pressing issues by fostering political commitment, sharing best practices, and promoting collaborative responses among governments, partners, and communities. The discussions will focus on enhancing surveillance, prevention, and care strategies for HIV and substance use, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach across the region.
