Just two weeks after receiving her degree from the University of Kentucky College of Public Health, Morgan Brooke will trade the classroom for the jungle. She is set to board a plane for South America, beginning a chapter she has envisioned since she was a child. Brooke's path is not a typical post-graduation vacation. She is joining the Peace Corps, and her training at UK has prepared her for something more specific than general aid work.
Brooke focused her studies on community-centered public health. This approach does not treat people as numbers or problems to be solved from a distance. Instead, it builds trust by working with local leaders and understanding the daily realities of the people she will serve. She believes that sustainable change does not come from outsiders arriving with fixed plans. It comes from listening first.
Her destination in South America remains focused on community health initiatives, but the exact location and project details are part of the Peace Corps assignment process. What is clear is that Brooke will apply the same principles she learned in Kentucky: meet people where they are, respect their knowledge, and build programs that can outlast any single volunteer. She sees her role as a partner, not a savior.
For Brooke, this is the fulfillment of a long-held dream. She remembers talking about the Peace Corps as a child, imagining a life of service abroad. Now, with a public health degree in hand and a plane ticket for two weeks after graduation, that dream is becoming a daily reality. She is not just leaving campus. She is taking the campus with her.
